How to Choose Your Wedding Dress Today the beautiful, pristine, white gown has become the common symbol of a wedding gown and most girls dream of the day when they can wear one. During the years of the World Wars many women chose to be married in dresses that they could alter slightly to be used over again and it has only been over the last several decades that women have, once again, chosen extravagant, specialized gowns to grace their special day. Coco Chanel, the world famous couturier, ensured that the white wedding gown would become the mode when she released her knee-length white wedding dress, adorned with a magnificent train.
Fabrics of long ago were not nearly as easy-care as most of our modern fabrics, and a white gown would have become soiled and stained probably during that first use, so it made sense that very few women used white gowns. She was probably only able to do this because she could afford not to use the gown again! This may seem like a romantic tradition, but in fact, the white wedding dress has only became popular after 1860, when Queen Victoria married in a magnificent white gown. Not so! White is the color of purity and virtue and for this reason you could be forgiven for thinking that wedding dresses were always white.
Think of a wedding dress, and the bet is that you will think of a magnificent white gown.
